How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even here when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump
