How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant audi replacement keys (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump
